In this first part, artist José García Vallés researches into the possibilities of the Greek letter lambda and its meaning as the wavelength measurement for the distance travelled by a disturbance in a certain time interval.
The result set out is a programmed machine that systematically reproduces a given pattern by laser cutting the wood planks that are grouped to create this large modular composition. This method reminds us of Deleuze and the diagram, for painting is a means of modulating light, colour or both, depending on a signal-space carrying a certain number of binary relations that are emitted based on an established code.
Thus, the artist deactivates the purely mechanical nature of the machine, bringing it closer to a much more pictorial—almost poetic—domain, where what is unleashed is the work’s manual engagement as a form of romantic heritage, calling for a new regime in which technical reproduction becomes inseparable from artistic practice.
About the artist
José García Vallés (Sevilla, 1986) combines in his work technological means such as 3D printing and electronic programming with materials like wood and fabrics. His interest in geometric abstraction leads him to create installations in which he systematises a certain pattern with the intention of creating spatio-temporal analogies which relate to the study of movement. His work has been exhibited at Fundación Newcastle (Murcia), CAC (Málaga), CAAC (Seville) and the Weber-Lutgen Gallery in Seville, among others..
