Luis Adelantado is pleased to present Destroy All Monsters, an exhibition that arises from the dialogue and common work between the artists Folkert de Jong and Javier Palacios after their experience of sharing a studio in Amsterdam.
The title of the show rescues the mythical protopunk band of the artist Mike Kelley and will be the attitude with which they face these new works, conceived as an urgent exorcism against the forces that threaten us.
This is how Destroy All Monsters confabulates a whole series of mechanisms in which the system of objects is worshipped, at the same time as certain icons of art history are examined, summoning memory as a zone of exchange, but also as a possibility of fiction.
As if it were an ontology of the present, the artists adopt the role of intermediaries in which they place objects at the centre of a ritual whose intention is to conjure up the conditions provided by the market-state, namely all those demons that, in one way or another, suffocate our affections as a social body.
As Freud proposed in his book Totem and Taboo, all modern forms of socialisation find their origin in totemism. Hence, De Jong and Palacios’ attitude is to recover a concrete modality of sacred objects that dares to precipitate from the unconscious some new beast with which to face these convulsive times.
