The career of the artist Irma Álvarez-Laviada could be situated in the field of expanded painting, in an attempt to question, from a radical position, everything that in some way alludes to the structural elements of painting in its self-referentiality as a medium. In this way, the painting becomes an autonomous entity, whose flat surface no longer refers to anything but itself, thus overcoming everything related to representation and the illusion of depth.
He has received awards such as the BMW Prize, the Botín Foundation Visual Arts grant and the residency grant for the Cité des Arts in Paris. Asimismo, su trabajo se ha mostrado tanto en ferias internacionales como Maco, Liste, Photo Miami, CIRCA, ARCO, Estampa, etc como en instituciones entre las que destacan el Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Fundación Cerezales Antonino y Cinia (León), Fundación RAC (Pontevedra) y forma parte de importantes colecciones como el Parlamento Europeo, AECID, Colección Pilar Citoler, Colección Mariano Yera, Ministerio de Cultura de España, Fundación Antonio Gala, Galila Barzilai Collection (Bruselas) y la Berezdivin Collection (Puerto Rico). He recently presented his solo exhibition at the Museo de Bellas Artes de Asturias.
